Environmental Awareness Credits
Since AP Environmental Science is a college based course, we do not allow for test remediation; however, we allow students additional learning opportunities that can earn them extra grade percentage points for the semester.
A student may earn between 1 to 10 Environmental Awareness Credits (EACs) per quarter. Each credit earned will give them a small grade boost in their major assessment category. Completion of these activities only increases a student overall grade for the quarter. If a student elects to not do any, it does not affect their grade. If they only do a few, it will still give them an increase, but not as much of an increase if they do all 10.
Students may not earn all of their points within a certain "category." They may only earn up to 4 points for a certain category. For example, they cannot get all 10 credits for watching 10 different documentaries. They will only earn 4 for that category, even if they did 6 documentaries. Categories are outlined below, but students may also create their own opportunities as long as they get teacher approval FIRST.
The following criteria must be met to receive credit for the quarter:
It is the student's responsibility to keep track of their experiences, even if they submit opportunities through Canvas. Only the tracking log that is submitted will be assessed to count towards this bonus grade. Students will submit a document at the end of both quarters (do not use the same document for both quarters).

The following criteria must be met to receive credit for the quarter:
- May receive up to a maximum of 10 credits for the quarter.
- You may only receive a maximum of 4 credits per category per quarter.
- For each event/activity, you must complete a summary on Canvas and provide documentation, if necessary. The event will not count without this portion completed in its entirety.
- Proposals for additional activities not listed in Canvas may be submitted in writing for approval from your APES teacher.
- Activities completed that are not pre-approved may not receive credit.
- The activity log must be submitted before end of quarter in order to receive credits. Logs will not be accepted after the quarter ends.
- Awareness Activities: These are activities that teachers provide that require students to get out and experience their outdoor spaces. They will be provided directly through Canvas.
- Documentary Screenings: Teachers will provide these opportunities (students may not just pick their own)
- Progress Checks: Students may complete progress checks within AP Classroom to earn credits
- Book Reports: Students should use the approved list or ask their teacher to approve the title they wish to read and summarize
- Learning/Lab Extensions: Teachers will provide these opportunities as they become available
- Campus Speakers/Museum Lectures: Teachers will provide these opportunities as they become available
- Environmental Experiences: Teachers outline these opportunities in Canvas ( i.e. Carolina Tiger Rescue, Duke Lemur Center, Zoo trip, Hiking/Camping, Science Museum Visit)
- Campus Clean-ups & Environmental Club: Most on this will be made available as school resumes session (as applicable)
- Volunteer Work/Trail Maintenance Events: Students should check with their teacher on what their volunteer work is before adding to their log as it must relate directly to our course of study. These events should have a "supervisor" that either emails or provides contact information for the teacher to reach out to in order to verify the work completed. (i.e. Umstead Park, Lake Crabtree, Hemlocks Bluff, Soup Kitchen, Resale Store, Habitat for Humanity, Museum Volunteering)
